Iran asks US to Show ‘goodwill’ in Nuclear Talks

Tehran, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) –Iran’s Foreign Minister Abdullah Hiyan said Thursday that the United States must show “goodwill” in negotiations on a joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue.Iran has sent a clear message to the United States that it must show “goodwill” in the nuclear talks with Iran, Abdullahiyan said, referring to the recent announcement by the United States to restore sanctions waivers on part of Iran’s civilian nuclear program, Mehr news Agency reported. The Iranian side believes that “goodwill” must be concrete actions. The announcement of lifting some sanctions against Iran can be regarded as the “goodwill” talked about by the US side, but it is not enough just to stay on paper.Abdullahian said the parties involved in the Iranian nuclear deal, especially western countries, should make “necessary guarantees” to fulfill their commitments under the agreement, which is “a key and basic issue” of the Iranian nuclear talks.”For Iran, real, effective and verifiable economic interests are a necessary condition for reaching an agreement,” Said Shamhani, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, on social media.Mere “gestures” of sanctions relief are not considered “constructive”.The US government on Thursday reinstated sanctions waivers for some of Iran’s civilian nuclear program, saying the move would help boost nuclear negotiations with Iran.In July 2015, Iran reached a nuclear deal with the United States, The United Kingdom, France, Russia, China and Germany. In May 2018, the US government unilaterally withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal, and subsequently renewed and added a series of sanctions against Iran, including the suspension of sanctions exemptions for Iran’s civilian nuclear programs.Since May 2019, Iran has gradually suspended the implementation of some provisions of the nuclear deal, but promised that the measures taken are “reversible”.In April 2021, the parties involved in the Iranian nuclear agreement will hold talks in Vienna, capital of Austria, to discuss the resumption of the implementation of the agreement between the United States and Iran. The United States is indirectly involved in the negotiations. The eighth round of negotiations was launched in Vienna on December 27, 2021.(after)
